Non-traditional Customs from Amish Country

by Don Morton

Have you ever purchased an item and thought if only it looked like THIS it would be perfect? Until recently I wasn't a big fan of customization, a lot of the work I've seen hasn't seemed very original, most pieces look like an alerted version of the original, and I've been more of a purist. But recently I came across a custom piece that left me speechless, and immediately changed my mind about customization in general.

In the world of collectibles and exclusives nothing is more exclusive than a custom piece. With so many talented people in this world why not take advantage of making your collectible the piece you've always wanted?

The piece that changed my mind was created by an artist name Mostly Harmless; it's the Dynamic Duo (at top) the thought, detail, and originality of his work were amazing. The piece is currently being auctioned on eBay for Partners In Prevention - Funko Funatics Fighting Cancer, a charity auction being held on eBay with 100% of the money raised being donated to The Breast Cancer Fund. The artist himself seems to be just as interesting as his work. He is a 30 year old father of 2 who works with just about any medium he can get his hands on. Working as manager of a thrift store by day, in the last shopping plaza between civilization, in a heavily Amish populated farming community... most of what he makes is pop gore stuff: a Saturday morning cartoons meets Fangoria magazine styled vibe. Only recently has he started working with Funko Pop figures, and finds working with them to be fun, “as fun to make as they are to collect.” Like most collectors he has always been into toys, a phase he never grew out of. “I have always played around with kitbashing and paint jobs but didn't start posting pictures of my stuff till a few years ago.”

As far as his collection, he doesn't really get into specific lines, properties, or series, he simply collects whatever he likes as he finds it. He gravitates towards certain characters and fills in the gaps with pieces when they are in his price range. “I tend to like larger figures like the 18 inch guys Art Asylum used to do.” One of his favorite pieces is Shogun Warriors Godzilla, which he got at a garage sale when he was only 7.
