Monday Megaplex: Smaug Gets In Yer Eyes

by Dan Reynolds THE HOBBIT COMETH: Good morning Go Figure fans! Before I get started with this morning's article I'd like to apologize for missing you guys last week. I'm hoping, with a little luck, that this week's feature presentation will more than make up for my absence. So without further ado let's dive into a movie so anticipated, so exciting, and so nerdgasmic that you may want to read this feature with two pairs of underwear on. The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies is only about a month away and if you're at all like me you have it not only marked on your calendar but circled, starred and you may have even drawn little less than 3 symbols all around it. Wait, nobody else did that last one? Anyway, the upcoming movie promises to be one of the most action-packed and exciting movies of the whole series. I can't wait to see it, but in the meantime I'm trying to fill out my collection with some awesome Hobbit-related figures. So what's the big deal about Hobbit collectibles? It's not like they're Lord of the Rings figures. While LoTR did have some pretty awesome gear, The Hobbit doesn't fall too far behind. I want to take you on an unexpected journey through some of the awesome figures to pick up, in celebration of The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies.

First off, the master of destruction, Smaug. If there's any Dragon that just embodies the essence of what a dragon should be. No, not the dragon from Shrek, it's Smaug. He has not only impressed and amazed us on the big screen but the figures in his honor are also capturing all our gold. Take the three new Smaug figures from Funko for example , each of these oversized figures (6" Supersized Pop) feature amazing detail and craftsmanship from head to tail. Usually it's fairly easy to determine which variation will be most popular among collectors and desolate our collectibles budgets, but I think right now it'll be a real toss up between the Hot Topic Gold Smaug and Chase Smaug featuring his very unique eyes (we were one to break the story back in early September). No matter which of the three you get your claws on it's sure to be an awesome addition to your collection.

Now Funko isn't the only company getting in on this new release. Bridge Direct has also created a massive collectible figure of the one and only Smaug. It will be available soon, though has pre-sold out at some retailers already, so keep your eyes peeled. From the depths of Erebor comes this detailed The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies Smaug Action Figure, complete with Bard The Bowman and accessory. Featuring an impressive 22-inch wingspan, Smaug boasts 10 points of articulation. Measuring about 21-inches tall, no details were overlooked as this centerpiece of any action figure collection was in development. Limited to 3,000 pieces worldwide.

Now this may be one of the first and few times Go Figure covers a Lego collection, but I just couldn't leave out this awesome set featuring a very detailed (at least for Lego) Smaug. Though there's still not a whole lot of info out about this set it looks to be one of the coolest sets I've seen in a while. 866 pieces to assemble the scene capturing Smaug doing what he does best spitting fire down and causing mayhem. While not all collectors are into Legos, this in my opinion, is worth the investment.
