Thinktank Thursday: Battle in Hong Kong

by Austin Becknell

Guillermo Del Toro blew audiences out of the water with his release of Pacific Rim in the summer of 2013, and what is an awesome movie without awesome figures; one figure in particular, the Gipsy Danger 2.0 Hong Kong Brawl Version by NECA. The new and improved version of Gipsy Danger landed in stores in late November and has only been out for a couple of weeks. This Gipsy Danger is far superior to the original release back in mid-2013. Here's my review:

Sculpt

As you can see the sculpt is very close to the actual designs of the robot in the film. Every little knook and cranny has amazing detail sculpted into the intricate design of the Gipsy. Several new additions were added to make the figure more screen-accurate including the sculpt lines in the chest and the rest of the body whereas the old sculpt was very smooth and one pieced. There are also several additions that have been made to the sculpt such as the two hydraulic pumps on the upper thighs, the old sculpt did not have these. The sculpt gets a 10/10

Paint

This figure has an amazing new paint job that brings Gipsy Danger to life. The metallic blue is scruffy and battle damaged and of course the red and white added lines enhance the amount of detail that is put into this figure. The silver pieces have also been dry brushed in every possible spot to make the robot look more worn out since this machine has been fighting monsters for a long time. The paint is very smooth and makes the robot so much more realistic than the previous figure; the only thing I wish they added was Gipsy Danger's nose art on the right side of his chest, but I understand why they couldn't. This figure absolutely blew my mind when I saw his paint job giving it a 10/10

Articulation

This figure's articulation has surpassed the original figures' by far. His knees are double jointed, his head can look up and down as well as turn much more than that of the original - and it even has toe articulation that can held with walking poses. His waist is on a full swivel and can ab crunch. The only problem that I have with the articulation comes in the thighs…his thighs are on a small ball joint so they cannot move outward very much. Getting him into a running pose is easy, but because of the restriction of the thighs it’s hard to get him into really cool fighting poses. But everywhere else on the figure is fantastic. So his articulation gets a 9/10

Accessories

Since this is the Hong Kong Brawl version he does come with a few accessories. The biggest accessory included is the giant boat that Gipsy uses to smack Otachi around with. The boat sword is amazingly painted and sculpted; there are even small finger holes for Gipsy’s fingers to plug into so he can hold it firmly. He also comes with a second set of closed palms and his glorious wrist chainsword that just pegs into his forearm in a small hole just above the wrist. His accessories get a 10/10

Overall

Overall this figure is magnificent. I love this figure and all of his glory and I highly recommend this to all Pacific Rim fans and all giant robot lovers. If you were only to get 1 Gipsy Danger figure I would highly recommend this version. This Gipsy Danger is proudly on my shelf where everyone who dives into my nerd cave can see him standing tall. This figure gets a overall 9/10 in my book.
