“Intelligent slugs are not new to Earth. They’re just small enough for us to not know about them. From the telekinetic deep sea nudibranch elders, to the hard-mantled terrestrial gastropod mollusk, their secrets are finally revealed – forcing them out into the open to live alongside, or battle mankind!!”
Welcome back mini figure fanatics! This week I bring you a new line called Day of the Slug brought to us by Big Man Toys, you can find his blog here and his store here. Big Man Toys has done great work on wave one of these figures, and is planning on at least three more waves this year! Each wave will consist of four hand casted slugs, waves will have quarterly releases with the next three waves guaranteed. He has stated that he wants an affordable, collectible line of mini figures, with frequent regular release. I am more than on board with this!

You can buy these figures in either resin or rubber in a multitude of colors. Also available are one off color ways and unique custom painted versions of each slug. Each slug costs $10.00 or you can get a four pack for $30.00, the unique slugs vary in price. There is an optional trading card option that costs an additional $1.00 per card.
I elected to get the rubber versions which will be pictured below, for a look at the resin version Toy Twothousandthree has some great high res images here.

THE MEAT
On to the characters! First up is Jayslug, a great tribute to Jason Voorhees from classic horror fame. The retro hockey mask is awesome, it has a bigger round nose than normal which makes it more unique to this character. The mask also has sculpted straps that run back behind the shoulders. It’s got two human like arms with gloved hands, one holding a nice big knife to intimidate other slugs and humans alike. The main body has a nice subtle dotted texture with a couple of x marked scars from previous fights. To round out the slugness there are two antennae poking up just behind the mask. As far as size goes Jayslug is the second smallest slug.

Second is probably my favorite, Mind Control Mage. My favorite part of this figure is the big toothy maw it has for a mouth, it’s so freaky looking and awesome! A smooth lined texture runs lengthwise along the body. It has two small flipper like arms, one of which is wrapped around a staff topped by an orb. The staff itself has a surprisingly good wood grain detail considering its size. Two small antennae peek out at the top of the crest above the mouth. Size wise Mind Control Mage is the tallest, and second longest slug.

Third up is Mantle. Mantle has some huge teeth and a low sleek body that makes me think of some kind of deep sea dwelling predator. Judging by the bazooka that Mantle carries I would guess that he is a military slug. He also has a small pack strapped to his body just above and behind the arm not holding the bazooka. The body has a light scaled texture which helps it feel more like a slug. Mantle is the longest slug and also the first to have easily identifiable eyes and no antennae.

Last but not least is Cpt. Salty. I would imagine Salty was the most difficult to sculpt, there are a lot of little protuberances including body texture, a sweet little pirate hat, and eyes on the antennae. I love the body texture on this one, it is mostly pitted but also has small sections or raised boil like patches. Two small tentacle like arms are also covered by the same texture, and one arm is capped with a hook. The antennae poke out over the mouth with eyes attached to them, poking between them is one corner of a classic tri pointed pirate hat. Cpt. Salty is the smallest of the bunch by just a hair.

THE POTATOES
Looking at the trading cards makes me want to paint each slug as they are portrayed on the card. Unfortunately in the move my paints were left behind so that won’t happen anytime soon. Plus I would only want to paint an extra set.

THE DESSERT
These figures are some of the more unique figures I have seen in quite a while and I am a big fan of them. I recently saw some other slug themed figures in Toys R US called Slugterra but they are clearly directed at kids (my understanding is they even have a cartoon). These figures are great and I am excited to collect future waves. Bear in mind these figures are made in England, so if you order them shipping will probably take a couple of weeks.

Rise of the Beasts' newest color (army green) went live on Thurday the 29th. Get over there quick and get them while you can!
