Adventure Time is easily one of the most unique cartoons on television. Featuring the tripped-out adventures of Finn, a human boy and his best friend Jake, a dog who has magic powers and can change shape. Theoretically the wacky characters would not really mesh well with the normally more serious (even in his more campy incarnations) Batman.
These fantastic renderings imagine an Adventure Time/Batman mash-up done as 3D figures. Artist Volatile-Vertex came up with the idea to celebrate Batman’s 75th Anniversary and Bat-Finn has never looked better. In addition to Finn as Batman, there’s Jake as a gargoyle, Princess Bubblegum as Batgirl, The Ice King as Mr. Freeze, Gunter as the Penguin, King Worm as the Mad Hatter and BMO as Alfred. If we are lucky, maybe they will actually make these figures because they are perfect. I find all the renderings to be fantastic, but BMO as Alfred is particularly clever. The sneering expression is a nice contrast to BMO’s normally cheerful face, and the controller on the serving platter is perfect.
3D printers are being utilized for a number of creative projects there’s days, but one that tends to shine above others is the capability the printers have given artists and sculptors when it comes to bringing their ideas to life. In what seems to be an ongoing series of figurines, Volatile-Vertex has created the one set that I suddenly need more than anything ever.
Finn actually comes in two variants so far: the Adam West-style Batman with Jake the Dog as the iconic bomb (Jake can also be replaced by a model of the bomb itself) and the more modern, black and yellow take on the Dark Knight’s costume. King Worm has caused a ton of trouble for Finn and Jake. The Mad Hatter’s mind-bending abilities would meld well with the insane worm’s power to control his victim’s dream. For the Ice King as Mr. Freeze: even their origin stories are similar. After losing the love of his life dues to his obsession with his one new power, The Ice King wandered far and wide, attempting to grapple with his own humanity in the face of maddening powers.
The mash-ups of Adventure Time characters in well-known Batman roles work surprisingly well. But sadly these are not figures that are going to be available for sale anytime soon, as they are just 3D models made by 3D artist Volatile-Vertex. Admittedly I’ve only seen a couple episodes of Adventure Time, but this kinds of wants to make me watch more of it.
