Monday Mini Madness: Everything Is Awesome!

Hello mini figure fans! This week I bring you a Lego set that really gives you some bang for your buck, the Double-Decker Couch. Aside from being totally awesome, and being super affordable at $15.00; this set comes with five mini figs: Emmet, President Business, Benny, Ghost Vitruvius, and Unikitty. I was very excited to see this set at the Lego store, previously the double-decker couch was only available in Metalbeard’s Sea Cow set which is massive and not very wallet friendly at $250. Lastly this set is also packed with Emmet’s car, kind of an odd paring but I’m happy with it. Get your own DD Couch here.

THE MEAT

We’ve got five figures to talk about so I will try to hit the relevant information about each one.

Emmet – The star of the movie, who doesn’t love this little construction worker? Emmet comes in his standard construction outfit with brown hair. He has a double print face, one side happy, one sad. Accessory wise Emmet has a red hard hat, (with no hair on it unlike a previous version) and a 2x2 circular plate waffle piece.

President Business – The former tyrant is still rocking a business suit, unlike his blind bag version, this time it is buttoned up. He also has a double face print with one being a big smile and the other somewhere between stern and inquisitive. President Business has probably my favorite hair piece in all of Lego.

Benny – SPACESHIP! Now that that is out of the way… Benny was a great figure to include in this set, previously he was only available in the pricey Metalbeard’s Sea Cow and Benny’s Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP! sets. His helmet is the highlight of the figure, it is all one solid piece but it is sculpted to look like it is cracked, as it appears in the movie. Benny also has two face prints: one the hopeful look of anticipation he has when he realizes he might get to build a spaceship, the other has eyes closed and mouth open wide in the pure nirvana that only Benny can experience while building his spaceship. Benny has air tanks to wear on his back and a red sausage/hot dog to hold in his hand.

Ghost Virtruvius – Even in the afterlife Vitruvius makes himself known. His head is solid black to create a shadow through the full body robe, this give it a classic sheet over your head to be a ghost look. The robe is sculpted to have furrows rather than be smooth which is nice, it also has a smile and slanted eyes to make him look happy. He has his shimmery blue cape and sucker stick staff to round him out.

Unikitty – Maybe not technically a Lego mini fig but it counts in my book. So far this is the only set where you can get Unikitty in her sitting position. She has two separate face plates, one stunned/confused and the other extremely sad. I'm a big Unikitty fan but because her front “paws” are just a single 1x1 piece it’s really easy for it to come off or stick to whatever Lego plat she is placed on.

The Double-Decker Couch itself is the main reason I bought this set, from my first viewing of the movie I knew I had to have it. The couch is not as sturdy as I thought it would be, making this more of a display piece than a play time piece. The couch has four cup holders to hold the four mugs the set comes with and has four 1x2 pegged pieces to secure occupants.

Emmet’s Car is a nice addition, pretty simple (as it should be) but good detail. It has a cargo spot in the back to hold Emmet’s hat. The cherry on top is the 1x2 plate with the same radio graphic from the movie.

THE POTATOES

The couch is the both the best part and weakest part of this set. Physically weakest that is. Finding a piece that lets you attach the side ladders to the top couch without look out of place would make this piece perfect. Frankly I’m surprised it was made this way.

THE DESSERT

This is the best set I own from The Lego Movie, and I imagine it is only topped by Metalbeard’s Sea Cow. I am certain the double-decker couch will remain a center point of my collection for years to come, though the occupants will rotate regularly I'm sure. Lego knocked it out of the park with this one so I would highly recommend you pick it up if you are at all interested in The Lego Movie. Your best bet may be to get it online as I have only seen it in stores one time.
