Today I'm looking at a double-feature by LA-based artist Nathan Hamill. His figures have a curious cuteness to them, so let's explore what's on the desk today. Both of the figures we are reviewing were produced with the help of 3D Retro, purveyors of cool collectibles.

First up is the duo of Strife & Sire. The set comes in a handful of colorways, including a glow in the dark version, this is the Original Edition 2-Pack. When stacked they are 7" tall though you have to perch them just right to get that effect. The colors here are cool, almost snowy pastels. The list for this lovely is just under $50, made from a durable vinyl. Let's look a little closer....

The characterizations of these batty and octopus creatures is quite animated, and cartoony - especially Sire the bat. Strife, otherwise known as the "Warrior Imp of Calendula", is the quiet protector, and resembles some morph between the alien from Mars Attacks and any number of unusual characters seen on the original Star Trek series. The way he sits on the surface is simply geometric defiance, he's amorphous and lovely.

RATING

  • Sculpt: 7/10 (Sire); 9/10 (Strife)

  • Paint: 8/10

  • Originality: 8.5/10

  • Design/Packaging: 6.5/10

These two seem like an odd couple, but c'est la vie. It's great that they are not actually modeled together, so you can display them as you choose. The gray window box packaging is simple, no-nonsense, not too elaborate.

PS: You can buy these directly from the artist.

Hamill's Bellicose Bunny is a popular figure, this is the all black Stealth Edition. This 7" figure comes in an animated box that shows off the bunny in flight. Limited to 150, this edition has a clean, spectacular mix of matte and glossy paints. With his fly-like bulbous goggles intact he's ready for the stratosphere on a cool old skool rocket that would make Astro-Boy blush.

RATING

  • Sculpt: 9/10

  • Paint: 10/10

  • Originality: 9/10

  • Design/Packaging: 8/10

Bravo to the detailed, quite modern sculpt - love the jagged ears and the conical retro rocket. The stout bunny with the cement mixer shaped torso fits perfectly atop the rocket, it is a single piece that modulates nicely from character to vehicle. He's ready to stare into the stars, being a bit of an eclipse, the camo effect to the night skies is the "stealth" part here. You can get yours from 3D Retro.
