Presenting the Star Wars Vintage Toy Series Luke Skywalker in Bespin Fatigues
One of the most iconic looks of Luke Skywalker, the Bespin Fatigue uniform (Hasbro aka Kenner) is significant in STAR WARS history for two reasons:
FIRST – Some people have made the false assumption that Rebel Pilots are naked under their jumpsuits. They probably are given the bulk of the suit, but Luke Skywalker used this jumpsuit for much of his training in Dagobah which hints on just how logistically organized the Rebel Alliance is.
SECOND – The Bespin gray fatigues help movie-goers understand Luke’s progress in the Force. In Star Wars A New Hope, Luke wore primarily white while training to be a Jedi. In the Empire Strikes Back, he wore grey. In Return of the Jedi, he wore black. So you can see the progress from bright eyed, innocent farm boy; to a warrior taking his first steps in a much more complicated world; to the disciplined master that he became regardless of the dark secrets of his family name.
This particular STAR WARS Luke Skywalker in Bespin Fatigues comes with a lit-lightsaber, an unlit-lightsaber that has a stud that allows it to be attached to his belt, and; a DL-44 Heavy Blaster that can be holstered on his right thigh.
PROS
FIRST: I am very fond of the weathered detailing that went into Luke Skywalker’s Bespin Fatigues. It really looks light cloth and it almost looks like you can lift the flaps on his pockets. I’m also quite fond of the fact that Luke Skywalker’s utility belt/holster is not a part of the Bespin Fatigues. You can move it around a bit to help with articulation, but it does hamper the upper right thigh articulation of the action figure thanks to the strap that ties Luke Skywalker’s holster to his upper thigh. Finally, I like how his unlit-lightsaber clips to a peg hole that is underneath the belt and not on the belt itself, which gives the action-figure a more movie-accurate look.
SECOND: The articulation of the STAR WARS Vintage Edition Luke Skywalker in Bespin Fatigues in excellent!
ARTICULATION:
Head is mounted on a ball joint
No Upper Torso articulation
Ball jointed shoulders with directional joint and bicep swivel
Single direction elbows, with forearm swivel.
360° wrists.
Waist swivel
Upper and Lower torsos are bound together on a ball joint allowing for a tilt and a 3600 swivel.
Ball jointed hips with directional joint.
Single-direction knees
Boot/ankle tilt and swivel
If you happen to have the STAR WARS Saga version Luke Skywalker Bespin Fatigues, then you can pop the Vintage Luke Skywalker’s hand off and attach the bacta seal that was applied by Princess Leia to Luke’s severed hand in the Millennium Falcon.
CONS
Aside from the restricted thigh articulation, there’s only one other thing wrong with the Vintage Edition Luke Skywalker in Bespin Fatigues, he doesn’t look like Luke Skywalker. Well he does… sometimes. It’s certainly not the best facial sculpt of Luke Skywalker, but then maybe I’m asking for too much.
BUYER/COLLECTORS RECOMMENDATION: This is one of the most iconic and must-have Luke Skywalker figurines as this was what Luke was wearing when he first challenged Darth Vader to a lightsaber duel. Speaking of lightsabers, the lightsaber he has here was lost in Cloud City when Luke’s hand was cut off by his daddy. Supposedly it’s the same lightsaber that makes an appearance in the second trailer of Star Wars Episode VII. So this figure is about to become even more iconic.
