Jurassic World is tearing up the box office right now, owing everything to Steven Spielberg's early '90's classic, but unless you are remarkably slow on the the uptake, you noticed the scene with the shark being fed to the Mosasaurus, and you caught the reference to the movie that Jurassic Park and every other suspense movie since 1975 has emulated: Spielberg's original man eating creature feature, Jaws.
Bruce the great white, Sheriff Martin Brody, Matt Hooper and Quint hit the high seas and the big screen four decades ago this week, and impacted cinema and ruined countless trips to the beach for generations.
Jaws is so much more than cheap scares. It's gripping adventure, it's human drama, terrific characterization, and a flawless sense of pacing. When I was younger I stayed away from it, despite my Spielberg obsession, because I was terrified to see it, but in my early teens it quickly became a new favorite.
You can check out this classic at your local Cinemark this Wednesday, but first, let's check out some of the new line of Jaws toys from Funko's ReAction Figure series.
FUNKO REACTION SERIES - JAWS GREAT WHITE TOY
At 6x6x8 inches, weighing in at 2 pounds, it's the sea creature everyone loves to hate. Bruce is sporting an attractive oxygen tank clenched between his famous jaws, and this son of a bitch is ready to smile.
This is going to sound silly, but the expression on Bruce's fave is captured just dead on. The Funko folks put some real love into this one. A Must own.
FUNKO REACTION SERIES - MARTIN BRODY FIGURE
Standing at approximately 4.5 inches, this is one of the better figures in the ReAction series. For one thing, it's one of the few that isn't too skinny, because we're talking about Roy Scheider here. But from the wrist watch to the comically exaggerated oversized 1970's glasses, the details are captured perfectly.
ACCESSORIES: Brody comes armed with a rifle.
And finally, this last one is available ONLY at San Diego Comic-Con, but it's truly a thing of beauty.
FUNKO REACTION SERIES - GREAT WHITE CHOMPING QUINT
This gruesome yet cheesy figure is a perfect nod to the film's cheesey gruesome moment, and I for one am looking for a friend that is going to be in San Diego.
