Pop News: Asia Pop

Funko Asia has a great deal of awesomeness that not everyone may be aware of, here's Just the tip of the iceberg of what the line has available.

The Monkey King Set

This set comes from the Chinese classical novel Journey to the West. Monkey King is the main character hero. The Pop! figures from this set have a few variants including a black and white version as well as a SDCC gold version.

The other characters in this line include: Monk Tang (a Chinese Buddhist monk), Pigsy (He looks like a terrible monster, part human and part pig) and Monk Sha (known as a Water Buffalo). There are also Pop! figures of these other characters and each one has a gold SDCC version as well as a standard colored version.

Legendary Creatures and Myths

This set is one of the more progressive sets out there. It includes deities, Filipino myths, and a giant.

Hanuman - a major deity in North India where he is regarded as the sole protector against all evil. He has animalistic features.

Tossakan (a giant from the epic tale of Ramakien. He's a villain and is Hanuman's arch-enemy). As with the Hanuman Pop! figure, each of these figures have amazing colors and great detail. These two Pop! figures also have glow in the dark variants which just adds to their beauty.

Aswang (also known as Manananggal) is a mythical evil creature of the Philippines. During the day it appears like a normal human, but at night it can separate it's top half from the bottom half of it's body, and grow wings. How creepy and awesome is that? Just a look at this Pop! figure can give you the chills. It comes in a normal as well as a flocked version to add to the eeriness of this mythical creature.

This line has so many options and is just wide open for endless myths and creatures. I would love to see a few variants of -Yōkai (ghost, phantom, strange apparition)

- Bakeneko (a shape-shifting cat)

- Dodomeki (a hundred-eyed demon)

- A kumiho (literally a nine tailed fox) is a creature that appears in the oral tales and legends of Korea.

Jiang-shi "Hopping Ghosts" (a trademark of Osaka Popstar) are one of my favorite sets from the Asian Funko line. The hopping ghosts or Vampire (as seen by their teeth) is a type of reanimated corpse in Chinese legends and folklore. They move around by hopping stiffly with their arms outstretched trying to kill living things. This set includes 4 different hopping ghosts, The Sheriff, The Judge, Prime Minister, and Little Prince (which is my favorite by far). As with other figures in the Asia Pop! line these also have a SDCC Gold release and a normal release. There is also a Hikari release of The Sheriff (and Grey Skull version) which is by far the best Hikari I've seen to date.

A few more Asia pops that are out there are: Astro Boy, Dr. Ochanomizu (regular and flocked, from Astro Boy), White Brow Priest, Omamori Dolls, Leo and CoCo two pack, Sukjai (a Muay-Thai kickboxer animated figure), The Manny Pacquiao line, Oni, Wu Tang Priest. Then there's all the Freddy Funko Variants of Monkey King, and so on.

I could go on and on about the Asia Funko line. My final thought is that this line can grow to unknown heights, and open up even more lines that we may have never even imagined.

Signing off Eh, Canadian Chris
