Honey They Shrunk My....Emma Frost

Presenting the White Queen of the Uncanny X-Men, Emma Grace Frost.

Marvel Universe's Emma Frost is actually one of the younger X-Men, having made her comic book debut only in 1980 (Uncanny X-Men #129). She was created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne based upon the character of Emma Peel of the British TV series “The Avengers.” Played by Diana Rigg (whom today’s millennials only remember as Lady Olenna Tyrell from Game of Thrones), Emma Peel in the episode “A Touch of Brimstone” once donned the identity of the “Queen of Sin” and dressed in nothing more than a corset, panties, boots and a collar

Emma Frost would serve as one of the most deadly enemies of the X-Men – particularly the New Mutants - as she led the Massachusetts Academy’s Hellfire club, part of the teenage rivals of the New Mutants, the Hellions – till the death of the Hellions in the early 90s. Recovering under the care of the X-Men from a comatose state Emma Frost would become an ally of the X-Men and would become co-leader of Generation X alongside the now deceased Banshee.

Emma Frost would become an active member of the X-Men after she survives the destruction of Genosha where her secondary mutant ability to transform into diamond first revealed itself. She would then go on to become the wedge between Cyclops and Jean Grey, and eventually supplant Jean as Cyclops’ lover and co-leader of the X-Men. This would go on until the end of AvX series where Cyclops backstabs her to gain all of the power of the Phoenix. Their relationship was rocky from then on, and she eventually left him.

Her return following the events of the Secret Wars is still unclear.

PROS

FIRST: Emma Frost is a new facial sculpt above a repurposed Scarlet Witch body. The facial sculpt bears a lot of haughtiness and a sense of superiority that definitely comes with the character, as well as a steely determination to persevere through any fight.

SECOND: The Scarlet Witch’s body was known for high articulation meant for spell type gesturing. So it suits Emma Frost just as nicely because most of her gestures are actually her body trying to “cast” her telepathic powers. Emma Frost’s cape can be considered a boon or a bane – you can actually use it to support the character, but I think she looks just as nice without the cape.

ARTICULATION:

  • Head is mounted on a ball joint on a neck hinge

  • Upper torso is also on a ball joint allowing it to swivel and tilt.

  • Ball jointed shoulders with bicep swivel

  • Single direction elbows, no forearm swivel

  • 360° wrists

  • Upper torso swivel

  • No waist swivel

  • Ball jointed legs with upper leg swivel

  • Double jointed, single-direction knees

  • Boot/ankle tilt and swivel

CONS

FIRST: The Marvel Universe Infinite Series Emma Frost figure repurposes the body of the Scarlet Witch. While I love how nice and sexy that body is, because of her hip design, she displays a stubborn inability to raise her upper thighs, and therefore cannot kneel with one leg raised. She can kneel though thanks to the double jointed knees.

SECOND: Honestly I am not that big a fan of her facial pouting. At certain angles, there’s something a bit too masculine about her sculpt.

BUYER/COLLECTORS RECOMMENDATION: Personally I would love to redo her facial sculpt – perhaps something a bit softer, not as haughty. But this is a must have for any modern X-Men collector and if you are a fan of the Cyclops/Emma love team more than the Cyclops/Jean team. Emma Frost is available as a part of a set of six that includes all of the Marvel Universe Infinite Series Wave 7 figures for US$ 107.99 plus shipping here. There is also a Marvel Legends Diamond Emma Frost circulating out there.
