This week we delve deep into the Vault of Horrors courtesy of Hecho en México/Dunny Customs. Released today!
This custom maker is based out of Mexico and they have been putting out some jaw-dropping figures for the last couple of years. In this, their 4th series of blind box characters, they've decided to focus their sites on horror. Each character in this series is designed by different Mexican artists, so come with me into the vault of horror. I reached out to the makers and they said:
"We are a group of designers wanting to contribute something to the world of designer art toy customs, we try to promote the good work done by Artists in Mexico, making sure each our supporters and customers receive products of great quality, from sculpture right down to the box our figures come in. Thank you very much to all who have supported us throughout these 4 series and have made this project a success."
First up is The Fly designed by ElHoo Ligan. This figure is based off the look from the 1958 movie. There is great detail in this figure. Look at how well the eyes are sculpted. The paint on our Fly figure is amazing. The colors are very vivid and eye catching. I love the fact that the figure even comes painted with a tiny little tie, and fly juice allover his white lab coat. ElHoo Ligan did a great job in bringing his own take on this classic horror character by also including enough of the original look.
Next we take a look at a different take on the classic Mummy character designed by Shiffa McNasti. Shiffa's version of the Mummy looks like it could have been buried centuries ago and dug up to walk among us. The first thing you notice right off the bat with this character is he's missing an eye and and ear. I enjoy the dusty ancient look to this Mummy. The sculpt is very nice as you actually believe he had been wrapped up in cloth and is is slowly coming off over the decades. This little creepy guy is also painted so well that you can almost feel his torment of being the walking dead. The face and head are the stand out features for me. It just looks so well done and really brings the whole character together.
Moving right along we have Cthulhu brought to by Avatar 666. I'm a sucker for anything Cthulhu related, this one does not disappoint. Add in one dash of great scultping (especially the tenticular covered face), great attention to detail, and beautiful paint. All these features come together superbly in Avatar 666's creation. I personally love this more or less lighthearted look of the Cthulhu.
Our fourth custom in the series brings us to Jump Jumper Ant's, Heidi from the movie The Lords of Salem. This figure is designed with real material hair and matching sweater. I think this figure's face paint and bright Blue eyes gives it a creep factor of 9. You can tell it took many hours of time and precision to get the fine lines of Black paint around the mouth, Not to mention the perfect eyes that follow you just like a haunted painting. Heidi also has a chase variant (if you're lucky enough to get one in the blind box) her head glows in the dark and Heidi is covered head to toe in blood spatter. This little figure is so much more interesting than the movie is it was borrowed from.
Our next figure brings us a very grotesque take on an Easter classic. Inspired by gore in movies we get designer Tadeo Mendoza's Pasen (Easter bunny). This one is not for everyone. Our little Pasen has a bloody gaping, maggot filled hole where you'd think it's face should be. Almost all the sculpt and paint is centered soley on making this as gory as possible. The maggots upon his face look to be leaving a clear slime as they crawl in and out of this terrifying faceless creature. This guy will not be leaving any eggs on Easter, I assure you of that.
Our next little creature from the vault is Cyclops by artist Mahenta Power. Cyclops is designed to look very friendly, but should you trust that he is? Like every figure in this series they bring their own take an vision to life. I love the fact the scales or clothing on this little guy/girl looks like an old pair of of brightly colored pink and purple onesies pair of pajamas.
Projecting from atop of our Cyclop's head is a large pink, pointed, spiraling horn. The skin that is exposed is colored a seaweed green, The big pink colored eye brings everything together. Cyclops also has a nice big smile with one large tooth protruding from it's mouth. This is the second figure in the series to have a chase variant. The variant has black and gold clothing, It also has a gold Horn atop it's head. There's no smile on this Cyclops face, more or less a closed mouth. There is also one other difference, the eye on this figure is black and gold.
The next custom to hit us from the Vault of Horrors is Pumpkin-head Scarecrow which was designed by Yoste. This figure brings us a great mix of material and sculpt design. The pumpkin head on this little guy has so much going on, first we get a evil smirk with eyes looking as evil as possible. Then there's the giant straw hat that sits on his head, made out of material that resembles what it's trying to embody. Moving down towards the feet of this guy, you can see he's hanging like a scarecrow from a wooden pole. Tusks of straw like material shoot out from around his shoes. There is also a nice little crow sitting on what could be the Pumpkinhead's hand.
Now to the paint. The paint on the pumpkin head alone must have taken hours. We get what looks like a darkly aged pumpkin face. The yellow on the eyes is perfect for making this guy just look evil. The black paint used to outline features of the face works great to make everything stand out, even the tiny crow is painted with the utmost care.
The Eighth and my personal favorite figure is The Monster (Creature) from the Black Lagoon designed by Cucaracha Borracha (Drunk Roach). This has a impressive build, there's many different textures going on here. Let's start with the body that has ultra believable scale layers. Moving up to the head we get to the gills, which are meticulously painted. Mouth and forehead gills and scales really pull the full face together. Next we have the paint, the greens used on this little creature are perfect. It can't be mistaken for anything other than the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Scales all over the body are outlined perfectly to help them stand out and give them a life-like feel.
Next to make her way from the vault is The Bride of Frankenstein designed by Lupilu Soler. Lupilu's Bride is a mix of old and new. Her face is half green and the other half has the skull exposed. With hands wrapped in cloth (like a mummy) and a dress of flowing white. Her hair stands tall and is colored black and white. The thing that I noticed the most is the great paint job done on the Bride.
This figure brings us to the last chase figure in the set. This chase figure comes with the stand and chains which she stands upon. The other noticeably different thing that sets this figure apart from the regular run, is the fact that she has a fully gwreen skin covered face.
Finally, the last figure from the vault is The Werewolf designed by Mitote Rodela. Mr. Mitote gave this figure a lovely textured sculpt. The fur covered face looks like fur, the teeth in the open mouth look ultra sharp. The Werewolf''s crazed eyes pop out of his head. The paint has a good mixture of light and dark. The dark brown covers the Werewolves body head to toe. There's some nice orange and purple going on on the paws and chest. In each series of releases there is one box out of all of them that contains a golden ticket. If you happen to find this ticket you receive a one of a kind figure, In this case you will be receiving The Melting Man by ElHoo Ligan. This guy is slowly melting and looks to be in a great deal of pain. I love the fact he's wearing a black shirt that says "Hot" on it. I wish you all luck in finding this ticket.
Each blind box cost will cost $110 USD shipped worldwide. Sales will start today, October 16th at 5am PST/8am EST in the US. If you need anymore information, please check out their Facebook page. It's back to the vault for me, this is Canadian Chris saying later eh!
