Honey They Shrunk My Armored Daredevil

Presenting the Marvel Universe Armored Daredevil from the Infinite Series toyline.

Waaaaay back in 1993, penciler Scott McDaniel found a severly beat up Daredevil who had just had his secret identity made public. So he built him a new costume that featured protective biomimetic materials and added the touch of black and white to Daredevil’s blood red. He also revamped Daredevil’s billy clubs by attaching them to his wrists for easier access and to serve as a solid block when necessary.

Unfortunately the armor was destroyed in Daredevil #344 and Matt Murdock reverted to his traditional blood-red uniform: Which is a pity since I really liked the armor and Daredevil has bit of a reputation of being the most beat-up hero in the Marvel Universe (So wearing armor makes sense for someone like Daredevil). So I really like that the new Netflix Daredevil costume includes bit of light armor - it just makes practical sense.

The Marvel Universe Infinite Series Armored Daredevil’s blister card reads: “With an armored suit and steel billy clubs, Daredevil vanishes into the night to defend the city.”

PROS

FIRST: As I mentioned, I really liked this version of Daredevil. I love how practical it is and how the black allows him to disappear into the dark. When Daredevil finally reveals himself, all you’d see are flashes of silver, followed by a blood red-streak. True, in real life, he’s announcing his position with the silver bits, but it looks great in the comic books.

SECOND: The Marvel Universe Infinite Series Armored Daredevil’s paint job. You can’t see it until you’re up-close, but he comes with blood-red eyes.

CONS

FIRST: The Marvel Universe Infinite Series Armored Daredevil’s low articulation. His torso is one solid piece with no articulation whatsoever. Note that Daredevil can kneel, but just barely.

ARTICULATION:

  • Head is mounted on a ball joint on a neck hinge

  • Upper torso has no articulation

  • Ball jointed shoulders with bicep swivel

  • Single direction elbows with swivel.

  • No wrist articulation – Marvel gave this to his elbow swivel

  • No waist swivel

  • Ball jointed legs

  • Double jointed, single-direction knees

  • Boot/ankle swivel with tilt

BUYER/COLLECTORS RECOMMENDATION: The solid torso of Daredevil is a real let-down – especially in light of the really high articulation of the previous Marvel Universe Daredevil figures. I personally did not expect the solid torso and didn’t notice it till I opened it. I would have noted that it was another con that the second billy club doesn’t come off Daredevil’s wrists or that the loose billy club doesn’t attach to his wrist, but that may be asking for too much from such a small figure.

Still if you’re a fan of the 90s Daredevil and the look of the armor, he can still be made to pose quite nicely so it’s worth giving this figure a chance, especially since he will only set you back by $9.74 USD plus shipping.
