GOFN's Top 10 Videogames of 2015

10. “Star Wars Battlefront” (PS4/XB1/PC)

I went in to this game expecting another half-hearted Call of Duty/Battlefield clone. I honestly enjoyed the FPS/over the shoulder shooter far more than any other I have played before. With praise out of the way I have to say I hate how there is absolutely no story or campaign. Under the guise of creating a superior online game EA had opted to cut out any iota of single player fun to just to charge you for DLC and make sure your PS+/XBLive is up to date.

9. “The Legend of Zelda: Tri-force Heroes” (3DS)

The land of Hyrule..err Hytopia is an alternate Hyrule a lot like another game on this list but not quite enough like it to be higher. Where the story is very literally lame in actuality. However what it lacks in story it more than makes up for in classic yet not so classic The Legend of Zelda top-down puzzles. You play with two other players or in my own lonely anti societal case you control three Links. Some of these puzzles are totally different than any other puzzles found in the series thus far. I was ready to write the game off on story alone but after literally scratching my head in constant confusion due to three player obstacles and fighting some of the best bosses I have ever had the pleasure of destroying.

8. “Super Mario Maker” (Wii U)

Have you ever caught yourself playing a game and chirping to yourself “That was fun...I could do better.” Well now you can. My family and I have spent countless hours making levels and playing each other’s creations even my three year old gets in on the action. Imagine an entire level of [?] with coins in every box...well that is the level my son has made for me. Also the online community has done some amazing things just type in “Auto Mario” on YouTube and prepare to be blown away. Old young or even just of the creative mind this game is just for you.

7. “Yoshi’s Wooly World” (WiiU)

On the subject of my three year old Erik this is the one game he begged and pleaded for all year. For such an adorable game it really is fun. It is a simple side-scrolling adventure/collectathon. The cuteness of this game is the biggest selling point. You honestly have to play it for yourself to understand. I have a lot of fun and playing this game with my kid. If you have small children get it for them and play it with them they may surprise you with their reasoning skills and their own evaluation on how to beat the articulate yet aesthetically simple levels.

6. “Splatoon” (WiiU)

I have never been much for shooters. Splatoon is not just any shooter. Imagine if Nintendo were to literally revolutionize the competitive shooter. They did with Splatoon. Shoot your foes with colored ink or roll them over with a comically over-sized paint roller or just throw an entire pail of ink on them. Also I have never had a problem out of the online match making just a quick load time and splat away. So many options so much to ink so many muches of fun.

5. “Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection” (PS4)

Indiana Jones was always one of my favorite films growing up. Naughty Dog has a way of making games that are not only fun and engaging but also does the same treatment with the games story. Nathan Drake a treasure hunting swindler of sorts he also may or may not be the last living ancestor of Francis Drake the legendary explorer. When you are not ducking for cover and climbing ancient ruins you are unwrapping a sweet mystery very reminiscent of Ole Indy’s old movies. What an amazing collection/re-release. I just hope the new Uncharted can live up to the action packed legacy that is this series.

4. “Fallout 4” (PS4/XB1/PC)

Bethesda really knows how to make a post-apocalyptic world and it is a good thing they can also make a pretty stellar RPG. The game really starts out with a bang. Without spoiling the story there is a lot to do in Fallout 4, save the world destroy the world (again) or you could do your own thing and build your town up to your own satisfaction or sell your life to a game and do it all.

3. “Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain” (PS4/XB1/PS3/360)

Hideo Kojima has made some pretty amazing video games in his 30 plus years in the industry. Imagine if Nintendo were to loose Miyamoto and then tell everyone that he had little to no involvement with Super Mario Bros or The Legend of Zelda. Absolutely absurd. That is what Konami has done going as far to remove the creator’s name off of the last game he would ever make for the publisher… And what a game! The classic story is all here, filled with over the top revelations that include a giant robot capable of launching nukes, a shadowy cloning project and even a major case of mistaken identity orchestrated perfectly to where no one sees it coming, not even the most die-hard of MGS fans. The gameplay is pretty amazing, as you are put into a semi open world, told your objective, and you find your own resources and technique to undertake it.

2. “Xenoblade Chronicles: X” (Wii U)

Xenoblade Chronicles X is the most massive game I have ever played. So massive that gameplay dips in and out of 60 FPS-30 FPS and still has trouble loading everything. Most in game worlds give you a few cities to play in, while some even a few regions. This is an entire planet. It takes upwards two hours to just go from the starting point to the end of the map assuming a massive beast does not kill you for simply being under-leveled that is just South to North. Planet Mira is huge but don’t fret you can climb in your trusty Skell mech to make it a bit easier, but never have I felt the sense of adventure from discovering virtual landmarks the likes of Xenoblade: X. If you have a Wii U and like RPG or just simple exploration buy this game. It is number two on this list for a reason.

1. “The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D” (3DS)

Nobody listens to their fans like Nintendo does and no one is as loud and obnoxiously demanding as The Legend of Zelda fans are. Link is transported from Hyrule on a quest to find his snippy friend and loud mouth companion Navi to find the land of Termina. Transfigured into lowly Deku Scrub by an evil mighty magic he finds out that in three days the moon will crash into Termina and kill everyone. This N64 classic turned 3DS remake pulls out the fan service full force (some would even say full Tri-force.) from the same only more pretty fetch quests right down to the cow bobble heads. The more things change the more they really do stay the same. It may be cheap to include re-releases and HD ports on Top 10 lists but when you love something you love it regardless of the year. Not to mention I was among those clamoring for a 3DS port of Majora’s Mask so why not give back some of the love Nintendo has given me in making it my number one pick of 2015.
