This week I'm spotlighting the art of Dominic Qwek, namely his Striker Resin Garage kit figure.
First let me give you a little background on Mr. Qwek, and his inspiration for his art and creations.
Dominick Qwek is a creature and character artist with over ten years of experience in the CG industry. He's worked in the game industry, contributing to such game titles as Starcraft 2, Diablo 3 and Killzone 2. Dominic loves creatures, monsters and aliens. He's very passionate about his art, both in digitally sculpting and tradition sculpt. His main art heroes include a who's who of great creature, monster and alien art.
Dominic has worked on many different creations in the resin realm, which including an Alien pilot which is a 15" 9 part unpainted gray resin kit. This figure is unlike many other , with also having a great tip of the hat to H.R Giger. This Alien creature has such a beautiful sculpt, you really need to see it up close to do it justice. The claw of this figure is holding the skull and spine attached of another Alien creature, which he may have done battle with. This really brought me back to a Predator scene in one of the movies, where Predator rips the skull and spine out of one of his human victims.
The list includes:
Allen Williams
Pascal Blanche
Frank Frazzetta
Steve Wang
H.R. Giger
Carlos Huante
Neville Page
Simon Lee
Nirasawa Yasushi
Takayuki Takeya
Kow Yokoyama
Zdzislaw Beksinski
Aris Kolokontes
Some of creations in the bust form created by Mr. Qwerk include:
Gillman (Aquatic Creature)
Cthulhu
Hopper (Large grasshopper alien)
Zoton
Rakshasa
One other creation I really wanted to mention before we get to this Striker resin garage kit is Creepy Hill: Bobby. Bobby is a large slug like, hairless guinea pig type creature. The one big thing that stands out is the fact that Bobby is either wearing the skull of a animal, or that is his actual head. This was sculpted by Dominic Qwerk with perfection. Ok now onto the figure of the hour Striker. Striker's a 7 part, gray, unpainted resin kit, which once assembled stands 14" tall. The sculpt surpasses all other works in my opinion. The tendon and muscles show through from underneath this creatures hard shell like skin. A large triangle shaped head with many spider like eyes sits atop this beastly body. A horn liked spike shoots out from the shoulders of said Striker, giving him even a more menacing feel. Striker feels like a warrior of his race to me. I also get this from the fact in his elongated digits he holds the tongue of a beast, which maybe could be a pet of his. The feet of Striker are much like that of a ostrich. All this stands upon an alien landscape base. Here's a quote from Dominic himself about his Striker figure: "Striker is the second creature of a series of alien warriors I am working on. He stands 14 inches tall and features a slain creature integrated into the base."
If you want something really different and eye popping for your collection, head over to Dominic's webpage here and pick one up. They retail for $210.00 USD. Please keep in mind though, you'll have to have the skills to paint these kits.
