The Odd And Cute by Sho Yamamoto

I came across Japanese artist/designer Sho Yamamoto's page recently and the pieces I saw there were worth sharing with everyone.

Sho Yamamoto started creating these lovable and yet odd pieces 8 years ago. Watching animals and there form are where he gets his influences for these pieces. Each figure takes about 3 months to make, as he works on them in his spare time. All of these pieces prototypes were made in gray Sculpey, then replicated in resin. Yōkai which is part of a class of supernatural monsters and spirits in Japanese folklore also heavily influence Mr. Yamamoto's art pieces.

Umibouzu is a subhuman-like Creature that wears a distressingly emotionless face is based off the human form. His dimensions are 80x70x190 (mm).

Baby Kappa A tiny turtle-like creature, maybe even influenced by the Giant Japanese Kaiju Gamera. His sits in a seated stance with eyes wide shut, looking to be deep in thought. Kappa's dimensions 60x60x90 (mm).

Jack-O-Lantern is not your typical Pumpkin, rather a mixture of a Rutabaga creature. This piece also has a mixture of European folklore based on the Will-O-Wisp (an atmospheric ghost light seen by travelers at night over bogs, swamps or marshes). Jack-O-Lantern's dimensions 15×15×15 (mm).

Demon(1) is a haunting doppelganger for the Tarsier Primate, minus the Stomach with a giant eye looking out at you. Don't let this things tiny frame fool you, this guy sits atop a piece of wood waiting for his next prey to happen along.

Demon(1)'s dimensions 80x80x90 (mm).

Demon(2) Is more in the vein of a traditional demon, although also seems to have a few gorilla influences too. He is seated and eyes are closed (this seems to be a theme with some of Sho's pieces). Two teeth are visible in his mouth, He also has a couple horns growing from his head. Demon(2)s dimensions are 120x100x120(mm).

Mandragora has roots which resemble the human fetus in fetal position. Green buds replace the spots where eyes and hands should be. This one is a nightmare waiting to happen. Dimensions on Mandragora are 50x50x120(mm).

All piece are designed and hand painted by Sho Yamamoto. Check his site for these and more works.
