Stay Toon'd: Skylanders Academy

Well it has been a pretty long time since I have done a Stay Toon’d article. Why you may ask well I just had a new addition to my family bouncing baby boy. Needless to say I have been on daddy duty so my time has been extremely limited.

Anyway, let’s talk toons! There have been a lot of new cartoons coming out lately and many of them are pretty entertaining. If you know me you know that I am a Skylanders fanatic! If you are a Skylanders fan like myself you may have been yearning to see your favorite Skylanders and villains on the big screen. Well we don’t have to yearn much longer.

A few months ago Activision issued a press release stating that the company is entering the TV and movie scene with plans on releasing a few movies like Warcraft, which has had trailers floating around for a little while now and looks epic in my opinion. But the most anticipated release for me and other Skylanders fans is the new Skylanders cartoon series titled “Skylanders Academy” featuring some of our favorite Skylanders characters. For those of you that have been sleeping under a rock and don’t know what a Skylander is let me briefly break it down for you.

Skylanders is an innovative interactive video game created by Activision and it’s counterparts in 2011 geared towards children. Taking a physical toy and placing it on what is called a portal is how the game is played. The portal then sends a playable version of the character into the game and the rest is history. It was originally meant to be a new Spyro title but soon grew a life of it’s own. The game became so popular that it created a new genre of gaming called “Toys To Life” crowning the franchise as the best selling children’s video game of our time and has made billions of dollars for the company.

Many of Activision's competitors like Disney, Nintendo, and Lego have jumped on the bandwagon releasing there own Toys To Life titles. Only time will tell if they will also create some sort of cartoon series or movie to compete with the Skylanders release. There is no definitive date as to when the new series will begin, but according to the press release we can expect to see the series hit the screen the 2nd quarter of this year.

The show will have an all-star line up of voice over actors some of the actors include: Justin Long as Spyro, Ashley Tisdale as Stealth Elf, Jonathan Banks as Eruptor, Norm MacDonald as Glumshanks and Richard Horvitz as Kaos. We don’t know what network will be showing the series or anything like that but once I find out I’ll update the post.

What are your thoughts on this? Are you excited to see the new series? Do you think it will be any good? (I sure hope so). Who do you think will have the broadcast rights? Who would you like to have the rights? Nick? Disney?
