Early SDCC Sneak Peeks

We realize that San Diego Comic Con is still a few months away, but that time will fly, and if you are planning to do so (in the air towards California that is), you might want to have a general idea of what's up before you enter the geek thunderdome! Here we attempt to unleash a few early iterations of what to expect this year.

While you may have heard that some of the majors like 20th Century Fox have pulled out this year in terms of underwrap film trailers, etc. there will be an IMAX® presentation of Star Trek: Beyond in its entirety two days before its general release. That all seems timed so snuggly. Here is a look at some of the ideas floating around for this year's convention:

Mezco Toyz offers only a teaser from which we can estimate a guess would include (from left) Living Dead Dolls, an armoured Batman of some sort, Captain America, perhaps a Harley Quinn Mez-it (?), and mutants of some sort or other (maybe something from MOTU?). Were all really enjoy seeing how their One: 12 Collective series keeps evolving, so here's hoping one of them are one of those ;)

Hasbro has eeked out that they will likely release another specially packaged Star Wars figure in their ongoing and popular Black Series in exclusive packaging similar to last year's First Order Stormtrooper, likely this will be the first Star Wars: Rogue One to see the light of day. In addition they will also launch what looks to be a quite colorful Transformers Titan Force set (Windblade, Brainstorm, Sentinel Prime).

WHAT'S THAT SMELL?

We are not kidding. A really unique flocked and the world's first 'scented' Pop! From PREVIEWS Exclusive! this Swamp Thing (DC Comics) joins the Funko Pop! line. "He has an urban, stylized design, a special flocked texture that will make you think he just rose from the muck – and a distinctive scent, to boot! Summon Swamp Thing with this figure!" Includes window box packaging and is limited to 8,000 pieces." This will be an odorific moment in time, people! Just what exactly will he smell like? Other variations include regular release, flocked, and glow-in-the-dark. This version will be sold via Previews at SCDD, not sold at Funko's Booth.

For Pop! collectors (in case you missed it), check out our recent piece on the elusive Star Wars line of exclusives.

This is a big year for artist Jason Freeny, and along with Kidrobot and Bigshot Toyworks will unveil the Anatomical Wabbit. We have enjoyed the evolution of these halfsie figures from the gingerbread men to the Lego figures to those released by Mighty Jaxx, but this will be a convention fave for sure (this figure has already pre-order sold out at some respectable sources).

A continuing trend are these keepsake ornaments from Hallmark. Over the last two years we have spied variations from Planet of the Apes and several other franchises, but here we have the latest incarnation of Batman (Ben Affleck), an armored version that's pretty cool from the DC Universe. They will also offer a colorful, dangling Barbie shoe ornament as well as small version 50th Anniversary U.S.S. Enterprise edition (and a gold edition). Additionally there will be a few others (Chekov, Kirk/M-113) from the original Star Trek television show, anticipating the film and upcoming 2017 series on CBS.

In what seems to have been the very first announcement of a sleek new Sideshow sixth scale figure comes a re-imagined R2-D2 as appears in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. We believe this will be a convention exclusive and that it will be a prototype (unpainted, monochrome). What do you think of this beauty?

There's been lots of other ruminations about figures from the new Ghostbusters, NECA's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mattel exclusives from Halo and ThunderCats among others and of course an amazing new McFarlane Toys piece from The Walking Dead (below) - is that a giant slug zombie!?...so much to look forward to.

There will be a ton of announcements soon, but this is just a quick taster. One of the prime sites to get information about such things is the informative and detailed Unofficial SDCC Blog. At presstime GOFN is not planning to attend this year, though we are always appreciative of attending guest bloggers who might want to report from the floor. Is that you (?), then let us know.
