What's Inside A Skull?

As you may have noticed from these pages, GOFN follow the work of Mighty Jaxx regularly, and are mostly fans of what this Singapore-based company produces, and in its collaborations. This is not the case with their most recent announcement as a pairing with hipster watchmaker, Hypergrand. Mind you, the #AEFAE timepiece with its Nano strap and simple crossbones on a black on black minimalist round face is quite good design. But wait, there's more....

A Watch-holder As Not Seen On TV: Since the advent of the mobile phone, most people no longer even wear watches - but for those who do, this looks like a fine enough timepiece. And then it's housed inside a 'third eye' type half devil/unicorn black matte skull that in and of itself is also quite cool as an object. But that's where I lose track of the essence of Mighty Jaxx part of this collab...it seems that they are simply the 'window dressing' of the design/packaging of the watch rather than the other way around.

FORM + FUN/CTION: I suppose you could keep it by your bedside or on your desk to see the time....but the glam shots make it look as though the watch is set a bit back into the skull so it might be too dark given the monotonality of it all. If the indentation where the watch could be seen had an additional piece that you could plug into the polygonal hollow it might take the overall 'use' of the watch/collectible combo to a happy place - but it doesn't seem so. Design-wise it's fun/ctional....though as a sculptural designer toy it just doesn't work.

SKULL + CROSSBONES @ A CROSSROADS: The fact that the watch acts as the 'brain' and the skull though it gives the exterior first impression seems like window dressing and as such the becomes more a ticking timebomb, though overall they work as one seamless piece. Maybe there's much more than meets the eye(lessness) here, we are patient.....Oh, it's available for the first time in just eleven days at Singapore TGCC at the Marina Bay Sands (Booth #H3).
