HEAD ABOVE THE REST: There are two 6" resin works, by very different artists, that came out this week, or you should expect very soon, which defy the human body in strange ways. The first is by Emilio Subirá, and is titled Third Eye. It is "about the origin of creativity or the absence of it". That's for sure, the expression is priceless, as water is the cyclical root of life. This is a trio of one-of-a-kind sculptural pieces in three colorways: "fleshy", "purple drain", and "grey time". It's as though "uncle fester" has become a fixture :) It crosses the territory of solipsism and psychedelia. The sculpt looks wild and wonderful. Expect these 6 inch tall heads to arrive on Monday, May 1st in his shop where they will be $220 each. Each one will be signed and dated.
HANG LOOSE: The second piece (NSFW below) is a bit odd in its fusion of body parts. The brazen work by Rolling Death Maui (named after a vintage Harley Davidson motorcycle club) designed by Nate Robertson is entitled Titty-Shaka. "The legend behind the design is that Robertson noticed a shaka sketch on a light table at a tattoo shop." The piece fluidly combines breasts and a singular hand throwing up the hang loose gesture (shaka sign). The piece was produced by Silent Stage Gallery and ʻUmi Toys Hawaiʻi. And though volumes could be said about the awkward objectification of such a combo there's some reason in the universe to consider these various works in the same breath. This work has an immediacy. I will simultaneously shocked and dear I say slightly titillated. Not being funny, as a feminist I'm slightly beside myself, but as a viewer of all creative things, the clever juxtaposition makes it an unusual celebration of the human body (for all its suntanned weirdness). I think it's the headlessness that brings the disturbing surreal nature. I've seen sculptures by lauded artist Takashi Murakami that are far more outrageous, but you won't find this (or that!) on my shelf - to each his/her own. This work is limited to 100 pieces, for $120 each, available at their shop. I apologize and you're welcome (?).
