Inappropriation

HIStory REPEATS ITSELF: You may have noticed our earlier piece, Split Decisions, on Jason Freeny's latest sculptural work, and all the related hub-bub. Aside from the obvious-ness-es of the KAWS n' effect situation at hand, here 'tis and it's #notacollaboration. It seems much more like a nod, an artful homage of sorts. I can definitely appreciate the purity of white here, like an erasure, harkening ever so gently on Robert Rauchenberg's Erased Dekooning (1953). Another unusual moment in art history. So there. ;)

INAPPROPRIATION: If you are so inclined you might take a look at the artist's entire photo set of 'the making of...'. We think the title and attitude herein is somewhat sort of the next wave in what Sherrie Levine did with her postmodernist (After Edward Weston) series, much post Dadaism, of course. Here it's all live and well, breathing a new life into the toy art world vs the blue chip contemporary fine arts. Here's a great (related) article from famed art critic Jerry Saltz that might be 'appropriate' extra reading. Though this has caused an actual debate between the two contemporaries it seems like a much larger (and quite meta) conversation among artists, and to the public eye. Just a testament to the universal power of art to make you think, to poke and prod, and to otherwise stimulate debate......Dissect this!
